Former England rugby star Will Greenwood has described Hawkshead as a “corner of paradise” following a recent stay in the Lake District.

The 2003 Rugby World Cup winner stayed at Prospect House, using it as a base for walking, wild swimming and exploring the surrounding area before visiting the Kings Arms, in the heart of Hawkshead.

Greenwood said the Lake District gives him the opportunity to leave his usual routine behind and enjoy long days outdoors.

He said: “We stay at Prospect House, which is a wonderful base because you can set off on some amazing walks straight from the door or jump in the car and explore further afield.

“My perfect day would involve a long walk, followed by a five-minute swim in Derwentwater – my own version of cryotherapy! Then it’s back to Prospect House to warm up before enjoying a couple of well-earned pints and heading to the Kings Arms in Hawkshead to refuel for the next day.”

Describing what he looks for in a pub or place to stay after a day on the fells, Greenwood said: “Somewhere that feels like stepping into a big, warm blanket. It should have that favourite-armchair feeling – somewhere you immediately feel comfortable and relaxed, where you can sit with a good pint and talk about the day’s adventures. The Kings Arms has this to a tee.”

The Lake District has held a special place in Greenwood’s heart since childhood. His favourite walk is the Old Man of Coniston, which he first climbed with his father in 1978, when he was five.

He said: “I have such wonderful memories of it. If I were told I could only do one more walk, it would be that one. The beauty of the view from the summit is simply incredible.”

Greenwood was equally taken with Hawkshead and its historic village pub.

He said: “Walking into Hawkshead’s beautiful village square and seeing the Kings Arms right at its heart, I wondered how I had never discovered this little corner of paradise before.

“It immediately felt like the kind of pub you want to settle into. I hung my coat up by the bar, ordered a drink and spotted Scotch eggs – my absolute favourite – at the top of the menu.

“It has such a warm, welcoming atmosphere and everything you want from a proper Lake District pub: great food, good beer and plenty of character.”

Asked to describe his perfect Lake District escape in three words, Greenwood chose: “beauty, endeavour relaxation .”
